THIRD EDITION

RESIST FALSE SOLUTIONS
TO CLIMATE CHANGE

2023 Highlights

Donate to help us fight false solutions for another year

When we released the Third Edition of Hoodwinked in the Hothouse in 2021 as a stunningly illustrated compendium of the latest corporate false solutions distracting from real climate action, we had no idea how much it would take off. Now, tens of thousands of copies have been distributed around the world and Hoodwinked has developed into a multifaceted project helping to resource the climate movement with an array of tools to fight false solutions.

For this, we want to thank all of you – for supporting us, using our resources, and sharing our work with others. But now, we must humbly ask for your help to keep us moving our work forward into the new year. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support Hoodwinked.

There’s no doubt that this work is more important than ever. As the most recent Conference of Polluters (COP28) showed, false solutions, such as carbon markets, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, nuclear energy, and geoengineering, continue to be advanced at the highest levels. But our efforts are working, with more and more climate groups seeing through the greenwash and demanding real solutions for climate justice.

As a reminder of some of the work we’ve done just in the last year to advance the movement against false climate solutions, we’ve compiled some of our highlights from 2023 below. With your support, we can continue to expand our efforts in 2024. Please make a donation today.

2023 Highlights

In 2023, the Hoodwinked Collaborative deeply expanded our work and reach, as we further diversified our efforts to fight false climate solutions beyond the initial publication of the Third Edition of Hoodwinked in 2021. New sources of funding allowed us to more than double the capacity of our small team of part-time staff and fund new educational projects and numerous movement-based collaborations. The following outlines some of the highlights of our work in 2023.

We distributed thousands of Hoodwinked booklets around the world in five languages, from Peoples’ Climate Week in New York City in September to the 8th International Conference of La Via Campesina in Bogotá in December. Hoodwinked organizers, authors, volunteers, and grassroots organizations distributed books at events, conferences, workshops, and marches. During Climate Week, we distributed 2,000 copies along with nearly 3,000 Hoodwinked stickers. In December, we sent 750 books and 3,000 stickers with our member organizations to COP28 in Dubai.

We expanded our online presence to a multilingual audience in over 141 countries, with our website and social media becoming hubs of accessible education and news on false climate solutions versus solutions rooted in climate justice. In April, we hosted an Instagram Live conversation, Celebrating Youth Climate Organizers, featuring BIPOC, Queer, and Two-spirit organizers, and in August a similar event on Mothering Through Climate Crisis.

We continued a collaboration with the Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management Program (EPSM) at The New School to create a free, publicly available curriculum on false climate solutions, which will eventually result in an online course with detailed, yet accessible modules on the various types of false solutions. In December, the pilot module on nature-based solutions was released in PDF format.

We continued to co-organize and host a series of roundtable discussions with transnational movement allies focused on collective strategies for opposing land-based false solutions advanced at UNFCCC COPs, with a well attended discussion in March on “Emerging Threats to Land: False Solutions, Alternative Spaces & How to Engage/Disengage with COP28.” As an outgrowth of these discussions, Hoodwinked and several allied groups put out a collective press release opposing carbon offsetting during COP28.

Plans for 2024

In 2024, we hope to further develop and expand on the projects we have established. This year will mark three years since we released the Third Edition of Hoodwinked, so we plan to return to the text and make updates to ensure it is up to date with the rapid pace of developments in the climate space. After this, we plan to do another print run to continue distributing copies to grassroots organizations and activists around the world. In addition to this, we plan to continue developing our online educational presence, host more online and in-person conversations highlighting frontline organizers, co-create further curriculum modules on Geoengineering/CCS, Nuclear, and other false solutions, and expand and deepen our partnerships with organizations fighting false solutions, such as youth groups. Finally, we plan to deepen our work with grassroots organizations and movements via the roundtable discussion group, potentially holding a series of in-person and online decision-making and strategizing discussions as a Peoples’ Alternative to the UNFCCC.

If you, like many others, have found our work to be essential in learning about and resisting false climate solutions, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to keep us going in the new year. We are a small team and even small donations help us to ship out more Hoodwinked booklets and carry on our work.

In solidarity,

The Hoodwinked team
