Dear Friends of Hoodwinked in the Hothouse,
As Pride month comes to a close, we are grateful to Indigenous Environmental Network for uplifting Indigenous LGBTQIA2S+ community. All summer long, we are reminded that there is no queer liberation without a Free Palestine and that QTBIPOC and Two-Spirit peoples have historically been at the frontlines of struggles for liberation, whether safeguarding LGBTQ+ rights, defending the Atlanta Forest against Cop City, or shutting down pipelines.
May we all continue to show up this summer and stand in true solidarity with those on the frontlines fighting for our collective liberation.
Amidst the recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings, we must recognize the horror of the ruling to further criminalize homelessness. A large percentage of people in the U.S. experience homelessness due to homophobia and transphobia, with an estimated 20-40% of the homeless population being LGBTQ+. Additionally, 1.6 million youth are homeless each year and up to 40% identify as LGBT. In the U.S., Black and Native American individuals are more likely to experience homelessness than individuals in other racial and ethnic groups and veterans experience higher rates of homelessness. The U.S. war machine, racial capitalism and the U.S.’s history of genocide, slavery, and heteropatriarchy, combined with an obsession for private property, the illusion of the American Dream, and a prison system that runs off slave labor… we are continuing down a very dark path of increased criminalization of poverty that is racist, homophobic, and transphobic.
“As #PrideMonth comes to a close, we want to highlight the interconnection of gender oppression, the climate crisis, and the ways these social issues are a product of #Colonization.
Climate justice is inherently tied to 2SLGBTQIAP+ rights. The suppression of our 2SLGBTQIAP+ relations has long been connected to the exploitation of land and water, body autonomy, and sovereignty and Indigenous Peoples. The Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny imposed on Indigenous Peoples was, and continues to be, used as justification for colonization and genocide.
Our ancestral understandings of the interconnection between cultural and spiritual roles that Two Spirit, Trans, and gender nonconforming people have within communities are difficult to translate to dominant and colonial languages. It was settler colonial understandings that forced us into the binaries, but pre-colonization our communities celebrated the diversity of people and their special gifts.
It’s also important for us to always remember that the first pride was a riot—an act of resistance to oppression. Liberation of 2SLGBTQIAP+ relations is a movement founded by resistance to violence and attempts to erase Queer and Trans Black and Brown bodies. We honour the work that has come before while acknowledging where we still need to go—continuing to rise up, take to the streets, be loud, & disrupt systems and narratives of oppression. We MUST demand change & remain diligent to future generations because they ARE our future. Queer youth deserve to become queer elders. Be PROUD of who you are—YOU are your ancestors’ wildest dreams.
Liberate Queerness, Resist Colonialism & Disrupt Oppression! ”

Congratulations East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice on getting the Southeast Resource Recovery Facility shut down in Long Beach! This is a BIG EJ victory against a toxic false climate solution – waste to energy goes down! “The passing of AB1857 allowed the end of SERRF by removing the incentive in California law that rewards municipalities for burning their trash. This means incineration facilities are no longer able to claim incineration as a renewable, clean electricity source.”
